Welcome back! With the holidays fast approaching, sometimes the reality of family issues can begin to settle in. Fortunately, this doesn’t have to become a stress-inducing reality. Joining us today from Divorce Matters is Cathlin Laraway, shareholder and Colorado’s Super Lawyer Rising Star. She’s here to discuss some of the most commonly asked questions about divorce.
Cathlin, this is really interesting, and it’s so important, especially as we enter the holiday season. A lot of people don’t look forward to them.
You’re right, and especially if it’s their first holiday season post-divorce. It can be tough, but the biggest thing we see when people are going through a divorce and haven’t experienced the holidays before is to make sure their parenting plan is very specific about how they’ll handle holiday parenting time. A lot of times, people might say, “I’ll have Christmas, and you’ll have Christmas Eve,” and that sounds great, but what time are they switching? How is the transition handled? It’s important to make sure the location is good for the kids and that they’re getting the best holiday experience possible, even after a divorce.
Absolutely, including who’s going to pay for what and all of that.
Right, and sometimes those things get thrown out the window. One issue that comes up a lot with our clients is the cost of extracurricular activities. For example, ski and snowboard season is here, and we all know those aren’t exactly cheap activities. When drafting a parenting plan, it’s crucial to determine who will pay for extracurricular activities and how that will work. We help clients create specific parenting plans that address these details, ensuring everything is set up properly so you won’t find yourself back in court later on.
No one wants that! On your website, you have wonderful videos. Let’s take a look at one.
I will never tell someone that you must have an attorney, but I can tell you that if you think you have an agreement, it’s worth at least coming in and talking to a qualified attorney here at Divorce Matters. It’s crazy not to.
I didn’t think I was going to need one either. But as I started talking to other people who had been through this process, I realized it’s a lot more difficult than it seems, and getting an attorney is probably the best investment you can make.
You also have an app, the Divorce Matters app. Tell everyone at home what this app is for.
Yes, the app is my brainchild! It’s a maintenance and child support calculator, and it’s available on both Apple and Google Play stores. You can download it for free, and if your income has changed or there have been circumstances that should make child support change, you can plug in your details and see for yourself.
It’s wonderful to have you here, Cathlin. If you call this month and mention you saw Divorce Matters on MHL, your comprehensive consultation fee will be waived.
