Family law has always been Catherine’s calling—the area where she can make the greatest positive impact on families facing some of life’s most difficult challenges. Her professional journey has provided her with a versatile skill set and multifaceted perspective, allowing her to approach cases with insight, empathy, and strategic focus.

Catherine began her legal career in 2009 with the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Principal Legal Advisor as a legal assistant, later serving as an Immigration Officer with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. She sat on the bench with a Denver District Court Judge as a Judicial Assistant, working on high-volume dependency and neglect and juvenile delinquency dockets. During this time, her passion for protecting children’s best interests grew exponentially.

Transitioning to the private sector in family law, Catherine has gained over six years of extensive experience as a family law paralegal. Her expertise spans a wide range of matters, including protection orders, legal separations, dissolutions of marriage with or without children, declaration of invalidity of marriage, allocation of parental responsibilities, emergency parenting time restrictions, motions for remedial contempt, and post-decree modifications.

Passing the LLP exam and being sworn in by the Colorado Supreme Court to practice family law under Rule 207 is a milestone Catherine is particularly proud of. She is honored to pioneer this pathway, offering cost-effective, high-quality legal services.

As a Licensed Legal Paraprofessional (LLP), Catherine brings diligent planning and strong advocacy to every case. Whether negotiating with opposing parties or navigating complex legal issues, she is committed to transparency, empowering clients by ensuring their understanding of the legal process and providing unwavering support during these life transitions.

Kate’s journey into family law began with her own personal experience. When her husband faced challenges seeing his daughter from a previous relationship, Kate took it upon herself to research and navigate the complex world of custody law. Through a lengthy and contentious battle, she helped secure custody of her stepdaughter, later adopting her in 2020. This pivotal experience ignited Kate’s passion for family law and her commitment to helping others through similar challenges.

Kate approaches her clients’ cases with a foundation of empathy, setting realistic expectations, and maintaining professionalism throughout every step of the process. She understands firsthand the emotional toll family law matters can take and is dedicated to offering strong advocacy while fostering collaboration and open communication. Her personal experience drives her commitment to helping clients reach resolutions that are in the best interest of their families.

One of Kate’s proudest accomplishments is going back to school at 29 to earn her paralegal certificate and, ten years later, passing the Licensed Legal Paraprofessional exam and being sworn in at 39. The most rewarding case of her career was her involvement in her own stepdaughter's adoption, a case that confirmed her calling to family law.

As a Licensed Legal Paraprofessional, Kate offers limited scope representation, assisting clients in drafting and filing important legal documents related to family law matters. Her areas of expertise include divorce, child custody, and adoption. She is passionate about guiding her clients through the often-complex family law system with a practical, client-centered approach.

Since graduating from Drake Law School in 2014, Justin has refined his advocacy and litigation skills by focusing his practice exclusively on areas of family law including representing clients in divorces, custody disputes, protection order hearings, child and spousal support conflicts, parentage issues, and many other issues surrounding and concerning families here in Colorado.

Justin leads our Fort Collins Divorce Matters® team and has provided smart and effective representation to clients in Northern Colorado, and throughout the Front Range, since joining the firm.

When Justin isn’t advocating for his clients, he and his wife enjoy spending time together in the great Colorado outdoors. You can often find them hiking, riding their Harleys, volunteering, or catching some live music.

Attorney Heather Rubin always knew she would be an attorney. She grew up in a family of attorneys and by the time she graduated from college, she knew that law school was calling her. Her love of research, writing, and education made being an attorney the obvious next step! Her incredible attention to detail and ability to listen to and understand her clients sets her apart from the rest. Her life experience allows her an understanding that family law is often a last resort for people navigating incredibly stressful and emotional life situations. This unique point of view allows her to sympathize with her clients in a way that a lot of other attorneys cannot. Heather likes to say that she “carries the legal burden” so her clients can “carry the emotional burden.”

Heather has over 17 years of experience in various areas of law, including family law, trust and estate law, and litigation. In addition, Heather works closely with families going through dependency and neglect cases. She relishes the opportunity to be a voice to children who wouldn’t otherwise be heard through through the legal system. Before joining Divorce Matters, Heather even ran her own law firm as a solo practitioner! Her love of law has allowed her to continue her legal education throughout her career, as well as volunteer with Metro Volunteer Lawyers.

In her free time, Heather is a competitive marathon runner and has participated in both the Boston and New York City Marathons!

Audrey earned her Bachelor’s degree from Cornell University, graduating with distinction in all subjects, and her Juris Doctor cum laude from the University of Michigan School of Law. Audrey’s expertise encompasses the full scope of family law, including:

•Divorce: From complex high-asset divorces to amicable dissolutions, Audrey guides clients through all aspects of divorce, including property division, child custody, and spousal support.
•Child Custody / Parental Rights: Determining the best interests of the child and advocating for clients’ parental rights is at the forefront of Audrey’s approach to child custody cases. She helps parents develop workable parenting plans and advocates for their rights while prioritizing the well-being of their children.
•Other Family Law Matters: Audrey also handles cases involving other family law concerns.

In addition to her litigation experience, Audrey brings a unique perspective from her prior work as a family law mediator. This background allows her to explore alternative dispute resolution options whenever possible, aiming for efficient and cooperative outcomes for clients.

Audrey is passionate about serving the community beyond the courtroom. She is a member of the Family Law Section of the Colorado Bar Association and volunteers her time in the community. In her free time, Audrey enjoys spending time outdoors and exploring our state.

Attorney Ariel E. Williams brings a compassionate approach to her clients’ legal solutions, empowering her clients with the knowledge they need to navigate towards a better future. For her, the most important outcome is that her clients get through their divorce with their heads held high and the tools they need to be able to move forward with their lives.

Ariel’s goal as an attorney is to provide excellent legal service through attention to her clients’ experience. For her communication is key in delivering on this goal; this means she is responsive with her clients, takes the time to explain everything going on in their case with them to avoid surprises, and delivers a sense of relief to her clients when they know their case is being handled by someone who cares.

Ariel is a collaboratively trained attorney and she approaches each of her cases with that training in mind. This means she works towards mediated resolutions, guided by her clients’ goals. However, when litigation is needed Ariel is ready to tenaciously represent her clients in court. She has trial experience in divorce cases, as well as post-decree, child custody, child support and maintenance matters.

When Ariel isn’t representing her clients, she tries to spend as much time as possible outdoors long-distance running, hiking, snowshoeing and camping. She also loves spending her time with her husband and two cats, baking pies and reading.

Emily Ahnell began her family law practice after she noticed a need in the community for unbundled legal services. In addition to family law, Emily also defends employers and insurance carriers before administrative agencies, and represents employers and insurance carriers in civil litigation matters in Federal and State Courts.

In 2004, as an Associate for Ogborn, Summerlin, and Ogborn, Emily began her practice in civil litigation, including complex products liability cases and employment law. When she moved to Hall & Evans in 2005, her practice focus narrowed to the exclusive representation of employers and insurance carriers in workers’ compensation claims and civil litigation.

While Emily still practices civil defense, she now also applies her legal prowess to deliver exceptional unbundled family legal services to her clients and the problems they face.
