Bio
David Koppa has been a practicing family law attorney in Colorado Springs for more than 20 years. He has a broad range of family law experience in multiple areas: divorce, military divorce; allocation of parental responsibility; division of large marital estates; post-decree issues; restraining orders; temporary and permanent orders hearings; emergency protective orders; child support; adoption; appeals of magistrate decisions; appeals of district judge decisions; dependency/neglect cases, and family-law probate matters.
Mediators in family law cases play an important role. David prepares more than most attorneys for mediation. In a short period of time, David strives to teach the mediator the essence of your case, arm the mediator with the strongest arguments favoring your position, and have the mediator work for you. In essence, David enjoys being the legal consultant on strategic decisions during your case. The decision as to whether to accept or reject an offer or litigate an issue is a major decision for you and your case. David has the experience you deserve as your counsel in making these decisions.
Despite best efforts to settle, many family law cases will have to be decided by the judge. Given David’s many years of experience, he knows what evidence to utilize, what arguments to craft, and what strategies to employ to help the Judge and opposing counsel see you in your best light.
David has volunteered through the bar association giving family law advice. In prior positions, he has been a corporate legal adviser giving strategic planning advice to a family-run group of corporate entities. He has handled numerous appeals in federal district court for applicants seeking social security disability. He has been on the Criminal Justice Act panel in federal court representing the indigent.
In his spare time, David stays active. David and his wife enjoy ballroom dancing. In the past, David has served on two volunteer boards for dance organizations. David is a skier and age-group swimmer. He enjoys long hikes with his dogs.
